Babington leek (Allium ampeloprasum var. babingtonii)
The babington leek is a native of our coastal region.
This onion relative looks very like a leek but is perennial. The babington leek
produces little bubils instead of flowers in early summer, which though small are not only edible but allow the plant to spread in sun or part shade.
If left alone in a corner of the vegetable patch they will spread, forming little clumps from the bulb as well as the bubils, which you can raid now and then for your salads or stews.
