If you've got the room then a crab apple is the perfect addition to your wildlife garden.

Though it doesn't have to be too much room as your average crab is considered a small tree reaching only to about 6 - 7 m in time. Completely hardy and growing well in most soils there's really no excuse for not having one, and according to the RSPB they are home to up to 90 species of bugs..!.

Always pretty and productive, it will keep your bees busy in the spring and provide plenty of crab apples for your jellies and birds, but not only that, if you have other apple trees it will help to pollinate them and perhaps distract the birds when the apples are ripening too.
