Unusual and hard to come by, the chilean currant is a pretty low growing shrub.
The chilean currant
is a useful and productive plant for taking over an awkward corner, it has spreading suckers but rarely gets more than 1 m high.
Bushy and evergreen with emerald, velvety bright leaves and tiny scented yellow flowers in early summer it is only really hardy in the southern half of the country. Not fussy about soil and although it will thrive in sun or shade, will fruit better in a sheltered sunny position.
If you have two plants (the plants are not self-fertile), the currants are produced in July-August. They are rather small and a bit hairy but have a good flavour, and can be used like any other currant.
