Such a useful plant, perennial kale should be found a home in every veg patch!

Pretty much self explanatory really, perennial kale is just what it says...

We currently have three varieties, 'Ewiger Kohl', from Germany which has small pale green soft leaves good for salads and greens available all year round, 'Daubenton' which has slightly larger leaves and 'Taunton' that is the largest with succulent leaves, darker with a purple tinge to the stems both of which are available through most of the year.

They are short lived perennials that do not flower, and can get quite sprawling and untidy after a while but it's an easy matter to create some new plants to replace the old, just break of a new shoot or two any time in the growing season, pot up in some gritty compost and they will root in no time.

As brassicas go they are easy to grow, though they will always do better in a good soil with plenty of sunshine. All the usual brassica pests can sometimes be a problem, we find it varies from year to year so protect from butterflies as best you can, and they will pay you back with lots of leaves for greens and salads alike.

The plants do not like to be in pots for long so we only propagate small batches through the spring and summer.
