The myrobalanor cherry plum as it is also known, is an excellent native tree for hedge, woodland or garden.

Although the myrobalan is often used as a rootstock for plums, it can produce a very acceptable fruit in its own right. It is a small tree reaching about 8 m in time, not too fussy but preferring a limey loam in full sun.

The masses of pure white flowers in early spring are followed by the cherry/plum like fruit from late July through August, which can be any colour from red to yellow. The skin is thin, the flesh soft and juicy like a small sweet plum. Please note, these plants are not self-fertile!
